More information for new students:
Application Process
There are three parts to the application.
- A completed application form, including your personal details and the subjects you wish to study.
- A personal statement, highlighting your academic passions and any extracurricular activities you are involved in.
- A test for applicants applying to study Maths, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. The test is designed to assess logical reasoning skills. No special preparation or revision is required. If you’re currently taking GCSEs, you’ll be able to tackle the test. Don’t worry, and please don’t let this step discourage you. For further details, refer to the document at the bottom of the page.
The entire test duration is 72 minutes, with an additional 50 minutes allocated for instructions, settling in, and practice across the various sections. The test is divided into three segments:
- Non-verbal reasoning (using shapes): 20 minutes.
- Verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning: 26 minutes.
- Spatial and figure analysis (using patterns and numbers): 26 minutes.
- Each section will begin with a guided example and practice questions. The test focuses on evaluating thinking skills rather than specific knowledge.
Please note that there are no practice materials or past papers for these tests, so please do not contact the school.
Entry requirments for Mathematics and the Sciences
Every year, the Mathematics and Science courses at Moonstone Academy Sixth Form receive more applications than available spaces. As a result, it is necessary to limit the number of offers extended for these subjects.
To ensure fairness, all new applicants wishing to study these subjects must take an entrance examination. The results of this exam will be used to rank applicants, and places on the course will be allocated based on this ranking system.
Students must fulfill all entry requirements for their place to be confirmed once GCSE results are received.
Entry requirments for Non-Mathematics and the Sciences
- If you select four subjects that do not include any Maths or Science, you will not be required to take the test.
- Your offer will be determined by your predicted GCSE grades from your current school and the availability of spaces in your chosen subjects.
- You will receive a form that needs to be filled out by your current school and submitted to Moonstone Academy.
Slection Processs
- There is a postcode requirement (refer to the full list above).
- The test results will be used to rank applicants.
- A conditional offer will be extended to the top 60 to 80 ranked students, subject to available spaces in their chosen subjects.
- The offer will be based on achieving 6 grade 7s at GCSE, including grade 7s in the relevant subjects for your chosen A Level courses, where applicable.
- All students must have a minimum of a grade 5 in Maths and English at GCSE.
Available Spaces
- Subjects like Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and Physics are often in high demand and tend to be oversubscribed.
- On the other hand, subjects such as Art, Media, and Russian usually have more available spaces.
- To increase your chances of receiving a conditional offer, consider selecting a mix of these less popular subjects along with options like Economics, English, French, Geography, History, Music, Politics, or Religious Studies.
- Your best chance of securing a conditional offer is by choosing a combination that includes entirely under-subscribed subjects.
- Once a conditional offer is made, switching to any of the oversubscribed subjects will not be permitted.
