Prevent strategy
Encouraging community solidarity while upholding essential British values.
Moonstone Academy is committed to providing a high-quality, liberal education that empowers students to reach their full potential while fostering empathy and respect for others. To support this commitment, the academy offers a well-rounded and diverse curriculum that enhances students’ social, moral, spiritual, and cultural awareness (SMSC). By prioritizing SMSC development, the academy encourages community cohesion and upholds fundamental British values.
We believe the academy should be a secure environment where students can engage with sensitive topics, such as terrorism and extremist ideologies, and learn how to critically challenge them. Equally important is the exploration of diversity, ensuring that all students experience a respectful and inclusive community. Assemblies, form time activities, and curriculum lessons actively address these themes, which are reflected throughout all areas of academy life.
In collaboration with the Prevent Team (Community Safety Unit, London Borough of Enfield), we work to create a safe, supportive space for students both in and outside the academy. The Prevent Team supports the academy by leading assemblies, providing form time resources, and helping staff identify students who may be at risk of harm. They also play a key role in promoting equality and diversity within the pastoral program. Additionally, the Prevent Team offers staff training, including the Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP).
This work fully supports the academy’s mission and objectives, which are to:
- Guide students in developing inquisitive minds, encouraging them to tackle challenges while gaining valuable skills and knowledge that benefit both themselves and society as a whole.
- Highlight the importance of academy life, not just as preparation for adulthood and careers, but also as an enriching experience in its own right.
- Empower students to cultivate self-confidence and ambition, inspiring them to reach their highest potential.
- Foster emotional awareness, helping students understand and connect with both their own feelings and those of others.
- Encourage respect for the diverse beliefs and values of people from all backgrounds, helping students develop empathy.
- Provide a wide array of opportunities for all students, ensuring they have access to a variety of experiences and learning paths.
- Support students in gaining a deeper understanding of the world, and how individuals, communities, and nations are all interconnected.
- Raise awareness of the environmental impact of their actions, as well as those of others, encouraging responsible decision-making.
- Inspire students at Moonstone Academy to contribute to the common good, both now and in the future, by making meaningful, positive contributions to society.
At Moonstone Academy, we are fully dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our students. We recognize that safeguarding against radicalisation and extremism is just as crucial as protecting students from any other form of vulnerability in today’s world. We are committed to making a positive impact on the welfare of young people and shielding them from harm.
Our policy on the Prevention of Extremism and Radicalisation (which can be found on our Policies page) clearly outlines the strategies and actions we take to protect at-risk students from being influenced by extremist ideologies.
The key components of our approach are prevention, protection, and support. We ensure that staff, governors, and students all have a clear understanding of what radicalisation and extremism entail and why it is essential to remain vigilant within the academy. Through regular training, our staff are fully aware of the academy’s policy on dealing with radicalisation and extremism and how to take appropriate action when concerns arise.
We collaborate closely with the Prevent Team from the Community Safety Unit of the London Borough of Enfield. They support the academy by leading assemblies, providing educational resources for form time, and promoting a safe and inclusive environment for students both on and off campus. Their work also focuses on supporting staff to identify students who may be at risk of harm, and they emphasize equality and diversity as part of our broader pastoral program. The Prevent Team also offers staff training, including a Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP), to ensure our entire community is equipped to recognize and address issues related to radicalisation.
As outlined in Keeping Children Safe in Education, ‘extremism’ is defined as active or vocal opposition to the fundamental values we uphold, such as democracy, the rule of law, personal freedom, and the respect and tolerance for diverse faiths and beliefs. This also includes any calls for violence against members of the armed forces.
‘Radicalisation’ is the process by which an individual begins to adopt extremist beliefs, often aligning with the views of terrorist organizations.
Every staff member, volunteer, and regular visitor at Moonstone Academy is responsible for adhering to the guidelines in our Prevention of Extremism and Radicalisation policy. Their actions must always contribute to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all students at the academy.
‘Terrorism’ refers to actions that threaten or cause severe harm to individuals, result in significant property damage, or disrupt electronic systems. These acts, or the threats associated with them, are intended to influence government actions or intimidate the public, usually to advance a political, religious, or ideological cause.
“At Moonstone Academy, we are dedicated to providing exceptional support to ensure our students have the opportunities and encouragement they need to thrive and reach their full potential, both academically and in the broader community.”
