Physical Education is an essential part of the curriculum, offering students opportunities to engage socially, reduce stress, and enjoy physical activity. At Moonstone Academy, we provide a wealth of chances for students to participate in sports, both during and outside of scheduled school hours. With a broad range of sports and recreational activities on offer, we strive to ensure that every student has the opportunity to get involved. Our Physical Education Department is dedicated to delivering a comprehensive program that encourages participation from students of all abilities.

We prioritize the development of students’ interpersonal skills while promoting a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Our activities foster teamwork, build mutual trust, and help students cultivate leadership skills. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of resilience and dedication in achieving personal goals.

Through promoting positive habits around exercise and nutrition, our aim is to instill a lifelong passion for sports and physical activity. We want our students to carry the knowledge, skills, and positive mindset they gain in Physical Education with them long after they leave Moonstone Academy

  • Offer opportunities for regular participation in competitive physical activity and sports.
  • Inspire students to raise their aspirations and provide them with the knowledge and skills to succeed in future careers in physical activity or sport
  • Facilitate access to external providers of physical activity and sport.
  • Create talent pathways for elite athletes.
  • Provide opportunities for the development of leadership and officiating skills.
  • Encourage the development of students’ character, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the future of physical activity within society.
KEY STAGE 3

Every student takes part in a variety of activities throughout the year, including athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, dance, football, gymnastics, handball, health-related fitness, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, tennis, and volleyball. Through these sports, students not only refine their basic movement skills but also improve their ability to communicate and work collaboratively with peers.

The school operates a well-structured House System, where students participate in competitive sports during lessons. Pupils take part in a wide range of activities, such as badminton, basketball, circuit training, cross-country, dodgeball, fitness challenges, football, handball, hockey, lacrosse, netball, table tennis, rugby, and volleyball.

A standout event in the school year is Sports Day, which is held in the summer term and engages the entire student body. The competition is fierce, taking place on the expansive sports field, with students supporting their House teams from the sidelines. Events during the day include athletics, rounders, tennis, and the ever-popular tug of war.

Beyond the core activities in Key Stage 3, students can explore a wide variety of additional sports and fitness options, such as aerobics, boxercise, trampolining, table tennis, and yoga.

The Physical Education Department also offers several leadership development programs designed to help students pursue their interests while mentoring younger pupils and contributing to the local community. We actively support students who are interested in obtaining national governing body sports qualifications, as well as those looking to take part in refereeing, umpiring, and leadership training, which positively impacts local primary schools and the surrounding area.

In addition to non-examination PE, students have the opportunity to choose Physical Education as a GCSE subject. Our curriculum follows the OCR examining board specification, which comprises 50% practical coursework, 10% written coursework, and 40% examination.

Students continue to participate in House sports competitions and the annual Sports Day, all integrated into their PE lessons. Key Stage 4 students also enjoy the opportunity to compete in various events, such as athletics, badminton, basketball, dodgeball, football, rounders, table tennis, tennis, and the well-loved tug of war.

Students have access to a diverse selection of activities, including football, netball, basketball, hockey, rounders, rugby, badminton, table tennis, cricket, and self-defense, among others. The Physical Education Department is dedicated to expanding the range of sports available to students at Moonstone Academy and increasing overall participation.

Coaching is provided by enthusiastic school staff, and in certain cases, expert external coaches are also brought in to offer their specialized knowledge and skills.

The PE curriculum is crafted to support students aiming for careers in diverse sectors such as sports biomechanics, the development of sports technology, biomedicine, nutrition, physiotherapy, education, sports management and administration, as well as sports marketing and media.

“At Moonstone Academy, we are dedicated to providing exceptional support to ensure our students have the opportunities and encouragement they need to thrive and reach their full potential, both academically and in the broader community.”
