     ART

Media studies incorporate essential skills into a modern curriculum that is closely aligned with the technological and global era we are part of.

Head of Department: Mrs A Stokes

Media Teachers: Ms Rubika Tang

Media Technician: Mr D Paul

The Art Department is made up of highly skilled educators who are forward-thinking, energetic, and share a collective approach to teaching. While we work together as a team, we also capitalize on each member’s unique expertise to offer students a wide range of artistic skills, from painting and printmaking to pottery and sculpture. Our goal is to create a dynamic and creative learning atmosphere where students feel empowered to collaborate and work independently.

Learning within the Art Department extends beyond the classroom. Every year, we arrange gallery and museum visits, art study trips, and artist-led workshops. These experiences aim to spark a lasting interest in the subject beyond the classroom setting. As a result, many of our A Level students go on to pursue Art at Degree or Foundation level.

Media students cultivate the following skills through our GCSE and A Level Media courses:

  • Critical writing and thinking
  • Studio production and working with audio, video, digital photography and lighting
  • Visual FX/CGI
  • HD video shooting and editing
  • Layout and design; print and web
  • Digital photography
  • How to pitch and idea
  • How to work to an industry-style brief
  • Confident and creative use of technology
  • Team skills
  • Problem-solving
  • Presentation skills
  • Creative thinking
  • Communication

WHAT WE TEACH AND HOW ?

The theoretical framework of Media Studies encompasses consistent academic concepts at both GCSE and A Level, such as Media language, Media representations, Media audiences, Media industries, and Contexts (social, cultural, political, economic, and historical). It also incorporates key media theories and creative media production. Students examine a diverse selection of set media products across nine different media types, including television, radio, print media (newspapers and magazines), advertising and marketing, video games, music videos, film, and digital, social, and participatory media.

At Moonstone Academy, students have plenty of chances to engage in activities beyond the classroom. They can join the Sixth Form Film Society, participate in the school’s Video Crew, or take on mentoring roles for younger students. These opportunities allow students to network within the industry, assist in organizing work experience placements, and submit their creative projects to national and regional competitions. Over the years, many of our students have triumphed in various competitions and have been chosen for prestigious awards, scholarships, and training programs through renowned film festivals, BAFTA, the BFI, and the National Film and Television School.

Students at Moonstone Academy enjoy remarkable success when applying to some of the nation’s top media schools, such as Bournemouth, Leeds, York, Westminster, and Falmouth. Those who graduate with degrees in fields like film, television, or journalism are fully equipped to pursue competitive entry-level positions within the industry. Many of our alumni now hold roles at leading media companies across the UK and internationally. Additionally, our strong alumni network continues to support our graduates, with former students often providing employment opportunities and guidance within the industry.

“At Moonstone Academy, we are dedicated to providing exceptional support to ensure our students have the opportunities and encouragement they need to thrive and reach their full potential, both academically and in the broader community.”
